* docs: flow layoutJustin M. Keyes3 days
| | | | | | | | | | Work towards enabling "flow" layout in most `:help` files. Since [tables are supported in help](https://github.com/neovim/tree-sitter-vimdoc#tables), it's now possible to render most help files as ["flow" layout](https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/9244da12e400ec0291450a5e9400d995e7a29b83/src/gen/gen_help_html.lua#L86-L88) instead of the legacy fixed-width layout. Besides [improved HTML rendering](https://github.com/neovim/neovim/pull/42381#discussion_r4285705739), flow layout will allow `:help` presentation-mode to un-hardwrap text blocks.

* feat(docs): table renderingJustin M. Keyes5 days
| | | | | | Render tables in both `:help` and generated HTML. Use NBSP (nonbreaking space) char in empty table cells.
* feat(multicursor): 'follow' option #42095Justin M. Keyes2026-09-27
| | | | | | | | Problem: - gQ does not restore follow-mode (q=). - Users/plugins have no way to check if follow-mode is enabled. Solution: Introduce buffer-local 'follow' option.
* refactor(charset)!: delete 'isprint' and cleanup 'iskeyword' and friendsbfredl2026-09-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | In the `enc=utf-8` only world, the 'isprint' option is quite obsolete. The function is only consulted for decoded U+0080 to U+00FF chars whose printability is defined by the unicode charset, just like higher codepoints. Meanwhile, invalid `\x80` to `\xFF` bytes are always unprintable. Disentangle 'iskeyword', 'isfname' and 'isident' from each other by giving them all separate bitsets. Now these can be updated individually. These updaters can back out of errors gracefully, no need for extra panic logic in option[str].c to restore partially updated chartabs.
* feat(exmode): "1q:", :exmode #41010Justin M. Keyes2026-07-27
| | | | | | | | | Problem: Want `gQ` for _le multicursor_. Solution: - Don't use `gQ` for exmode. - Introduce `:exmode`. - Introduce `[count]q:` as an alias to `:exmode`.
* refactor(exmode): Ex-mode as cmdwin + Lua #40991Justin M. Keyes2026-07-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: POSIX-compatible Ex-mode requires special-cases all over the codebase to match various quirks that don't actually matter to users. - The main utility of *interactive* Ex-mode is its REPL behavior, and that can be achieved with `cmdwin`, which also gains extra UX benefits. - The main utility of *non-interactive* `nvim -es` is for shell scripting, where Ex-mode quirks are mostly unhelpful (e.g. the "Entering Ex mode" message). Solution: - Reimplement *interactive* Ex-mode as a "persistent, insert-mode cmdwin" in Lua. - "nvim -e/-E" is simply an alias to "gQ". - Reframe *non-interactive* Ex-mode (`nvim -es`) as "script mode". - Drop POSIX Ex-mode quirks. Improvements: - "nvim -V1 -es" output ends with a final newline! - "nvim -V1 -es" no longer shows the "Entering Ex mode" msg. (This was pointless noise, unwanted for scripting purposes.) - stdin is no longer typeahead. Scripts (":lua io.read()") can read stdin as data. - Empty line is a no-op: a stray blank line no longer moves the cursor (deviates from POSIX ex "+1"), no longer exits 1 at EOF (E501). Preserved behavior: - cursor starts at "$" - mode()=="cv" (for non-interactive) - multiline commands (:append/:function/heredoc pull continuation lines) - bare-range print - :print=>stdout - -V1=>stderr - CRLF input - continue-after-error and exit codes Dropped (regressed) POSIX behavior (non-interactive): - Event loop only ticks while/between commands, not while blocked waiting for a stdin line. - ":g/pat/visual...Q" - input()/getchar()/":s/x/y/c" no longer consume stdin lines as answers: Nvim stops at end-of-input, skipping the rest of the script, exit 0. Use ":lua io.read()" instead. - If users care about this they should use interactive Ex-mode (`gQ`). - ":@r" stops at end of the register instead of continuing to read cmdline input from stdin.

* vim-patch:9.1.1638: completion: not possible to delay the autcompletionzeertzjq2025-08-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: completion: not possible to delay the autcompletion Solution: add the 'autocompletedelay' option value (Girish Palya). This patch introduces a new global option 'autocompletedelay'/'acl' that specifies the delay, in milliseconds, before the autocomplete menu appears after typing. When set to a non-zero value, Vim waits for the specified time before showing the completion popup, allowing users to reduce distraction from rapid suggestion pop-ups or to fine-tune the responsiveness of completion. The default value is 0, which preserves the current immediate-popup behavior. closes: vim/vim#17960 https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/a09b1604d4fe7516d87fbcbf2ffd2dc484799b23 N/A patch: vim-patch:9.1.1641: a few compiler warnings are output Co-authored-by: Girish Palya <girishji@gmail.com>

* vim-patch:9.1.1557: not possible to anchor specific lines in diff mode (#34967)zeertzjq2025-07-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: not possible to anchor specific lines in diff mode Solution: Add support for the anchoring lines in diff mode using the 'diffanchor' option (Yee Cheng Chin). Adds support for anchoring specific lines to each other while viewing a diff. While lines are anchored, they are guaranteed to be aligned to each other in a diff view, allowing the user to control and inform the diff algorithm what the desired alignment is. Internally, this is done by splitting up the buffer at each anchor and run the diff algorithm on each split section separately, and then merge the results back for a logically consistent diff result. To do this, add a new "diffanchors" option that takes a list of `{address}`, and a new "diffopt" option value "anchor". Each address specified will be an anchor, and the user can choose to use any type of address, including marks, line numbers, or pattern search. Anchors are sorted by line number in each file, and it's possible to have multiple anchors on the same line (this is useful when doing multi-buffer diff). Update documentation to provide examples. This is similar to Git diff's `--anchored` flag. Other diff tools like Meld/Araxis Merge also have similar features (called "synchronization points" or "synchronization links"). We are not using Git/Xdiff's `--anchored` implementation here because it has a very limited API (it requires usage of the Patience algorithm, and can only anchor unique lines that are the same across both files). Because the user could anchor anywhere, diff anchors could result in adjacent diff blocks (one block is directly touching another without a gap), if there is a change right above the anchor point. We don't want to merge these diff blocks because we want to line up the change at the anchor. Adjacent diff blocks were first allowed when linematch was added, but the existing code had a lot of branched paths where line-matched diff blocks were handled differently. As a part of this change, refactor them to have a more unified code path that is generalized enough to handle adjacent diff blocks correctly and without needing to carve in exceptions all over the place. closes: vim/vim#17615 https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/0d9160e11ce4b921adff1e5621dd989ce96fb0f3 Co-authored-by: Yee Cheng Chin <ychin.git@gmail.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | vim-patch:partial:9.1.1084: Unable to persistently ignore events in a window and its buffers Problem: Unable to persistently ignore events in a window and its buffers. Solution: Add 'eventignorewin' option to ignore events in a window and buffer (Luuk van Baal) Add the window-local 'eventignorewin' option that is analogous to 'eventignore', but applies to a certain window and its buffers. Identify events that should be allowed in 'eventignorewin', adapt "auto_event" and "event_tab" to encode this information. Window context is not passed onto apply_autocmds_group(), and when to ignore an event is a bit ambiguous when "buf" is not "curbuf", rather than a large refactor, only ignore an event when all windows into "buf" are ignoring the event. https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/b7147f8236c962cd74d1ce028d9106f1c449ea6c vim-patch:9.1.1102: tests: Test_WinScrolled_Resized_eiw() uses wrong filename Problem: tests: Test_WinScrolled_Resized_eiw() uses wrong filename (Luuk van Baal, after v9.1.1084) Solution: Rename the filename to something more unique https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/bfc7719e48ffc365ee0a1bd1888120d26b6365f0

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Prepare for https://github.com/neovim/tree-sitter-vimdoc/pull/108 which improves `{arg}` highlighting in many common cases: vim.foo({bar}) vim.foo( {bar}) nvim_foo({bar}) nvim_foo({bar},{baz}) nvim_foo({bar}, {baz}) foo[{buf}] The tradeoff is that things like `"[{"` are flagged as parse errors.
