* fix(options): extend dry-run validationLewis Russell5 days
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: nvim_set_option_value() dry runs skip checks in did_set_* callbacks. This logic also prepares values needed to apply the option, such as tab widths or a compiled regexp. Moving the checks into validation callbacks needs a way to save that work for did_set_*. Solution: Store prepared values in optset_T so did_set_* can consume them after the option is stored. Dry runs perform the same validation, then free the prepared values without changing live state. This extends dry-run validation for: - 'cedit': reject invalid command-line window keys. - 'completeitemalign': require each completion column exactly once. - 'cursorlineopt': reject empty values and conflicting line modes. - 'encoding': accept only UTF-8 and its aliases. - 'fileencoding': reject lists and local changes with 'nomodifiable'. - 'messagesopt': require mandatory fields and enforce numeric limits. - 'spellcapcheck': return regexp errors, including under :silent!. - 'spellsuggest': reject conflicting suggestion modes. - 'varsofttabstop' and 'vartabstop': reject invalid tab widths. - 'wildmode': reject more than four completion stages. 'makeencoding' also uses the shared encoding preparation. Separating value preparation exposed a bug in 'vartabstop' and 'varsofttabstop': failed assignments could discard local tab widths, and global assignments could overwrite them. Fix this by preparing new widths separately and applying them only after a valid local assignment. AI-assisted
* refactor(mbyte): use StrCharInfo/ClusterInfo also for str[len] casesbfredl14 days
| | | | | | | | part of a series, next big one is gonna be bring utf_ptr2schar and friends into the New world. after that it might be worth brushing of some benchmarks and re-microoptimize the hottest loops. also some const-y constess but it is fine.
* perf(mbyte): single decoder loop for both cluster byte length and cell widthbfredl2026-09-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This applies to the callsites which already used utf_ptr2CharInfo and then utfc_next. There is more work to be done, but this is a lagom bisectable unit. A lot of code is still wounded by the historical distinction between "low" characters (c < 128) and "high" characters, with the UTF-8 specific rules behind compiler flags and virtual function calls. As a result, there are both ptr2cells() and utf_ptr2cells(). My work aims at slowly reintegrating the realms. As such, we consider ptr2cells() the "correct" abstraction as is matches what actually is printed in a displayed message and buffer text without extra bells and whistles, except for tabs.
* fix(api): preserve option trust during mergesLewis Russell2026-09-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: API append, prepend, and remove operations reach the option setter as full replacements. This can clear an expression's untrusted flag and allow it to write files, unlike equivalent :set operations. Solution: Pass replacement status through the option setters so merges preserve the existing value's trust restrictions. AI-assisted
* refactor(option): simplify error buffer handlingLewis Russell2026-09-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Option validators and setters repeatedly pass error buffers and their sizes separately. Some setters return messages in static storage. Solution: - Add CharBuf for borrowed writable storage, with its length including space for a terminating NUL. - Move option error buffers to the callers that report errors. Preserve existing buffer sizes, truncation, and calls that do not need a message. - Consolidate option error formatting and the duplicated code that lists valid option values. - Return error messages directly from do_one_set_option(). - Remove unused arguments from get_option_newval() and set_option_value_for(). - Handle legacy TTY assignments in the existing callers and remove the redundant compatibility wrapper. - Reuse CharBuf for Tree-sitter query errors. - Pass CharBuf through the statusline and statuscolumn builders, retaining the buffer sizes provided by their callers, including title formatting. * fix(options): validate nvim_set_option_value() dry runsLewis Russell2026-09-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: nvim_set_option_value() with dry_run=true accepts invalid values such as foldmethod='nonsense'. Validation is mixed with side effects in the did_set_* callbacks, so dry runs skip it. Solution: Split value validation out of the did_set_* callbacks into separate validation_cb callbacks. Use these checks for both normal assignments and nvim_set_option_value() dry runs. Keep side effects in did_set_*. Replace direct foldenable/foldlevel assignments in C folding commands with setters. This gives C commands the same OptionSet and synchronization behavior as Lua assignments. Use normal setters for 'tabstop' and 'vartabstop' in :retab so C code indentation and folds based on indentation use the new tab widths. Direct assignments could leave them using the old widths. :retab temporarily turns off 'list' to calculate tab widths. Previously, :retab -1 reported an error and returned without restoring 'list'. Check the argument before turning 'list' off, so an invalid argument leaves the option unchanged. AI-assisted
* refactor(charset): use a variable instead of (g_chartab[c] & CT_CELL_MASK)bfredl2026-09-17
| | | | | | | | | | Incremental cleanup. A lot of this logic really made sense only for vim in in single-byte/DBCS modes, where the user got to program their own charset. Now we are just using UTF-8 internally, so the meaning of each byte in context is fixed. I think 'isprint' and CT_PRINT_CHAR also are in time to say goodby, but that will be a separate followup.
* fix(messages): dangling progress-messages #41222Justin M. Keyes2026-08-07
| | | | | | | | | | Problem: Some builtin features emit progress-messages which never "complete". - On failure, `:write` does not complete the progress-msg it started. - ins-completion never ends its "Scanning..." message. Solution: - `buf_write()` emits "failed" status on failure. - `ins_compl_stop()` ends the completion one.
* feat(options): lua closure/function optionsJustin M. Keyes2026-07-31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Cannot assign Lua functions/closures to "func" ('completefunc', 'tagfun', …) or "expr" ('foldexpr', 'indentexpr', …) options. Solution: - Store "func"/"expr" options as `Callback` instead of string. - Delete oceans of copy-pasted code. - BREAKING: LuaRef returned via RPC/Vimscript is now represented as `"<Lua N: file:line>"` (like what `:map` shows) instead of `nil`. - Note: `man.vim` still uses `v:lua` string, bc it's a vimscript ftplugin. * refactor(options): drop OptVal, use ObjectJustin M. Keyes2026-07-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: The object subsystem has an intermediate representation for no real reason. Besides the code cost, this also adds an extra (api <=> OptVal) conversion step, which is a (small) perf cost. Solution: We already have `Object`, so use it instead. - drop `OptVal`, `OptValData`, `OptValType`, and related boilerplate. - add `kObjectTypeUnset`.

* refactor(options): store dict options in :set-string formJustin M. Keyes2026-07-24
| | | | | | | | | | The parent commit made a valiant effort to store "dict options" in their reified form, but this is more trouble than it's worth: - inconsistent model for developers to understand. - string lifetime issues (the "varp" convention is to pass around an aliased, long-lived option value). - lots of extra plumbing to deal with the 2 different option-storage paradigms.
* feat(options): schema, "dict" options, messagesJustin M. Keyes2026-07-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Options parsing is still painful for dict-style options. Solution: schema-maxxing => better `opt:get()` (will be the basis for `vim.o()`), unified (and more-detailed) err msgs. - Drop bespoke structure-builder in `_core/options.lua`. - Define `schema` for all non-primitive options (except 'guicursor' and statusline-style options); generate reified keysets `OptKeyDict`). - Generate 'fillchars' => `fcs_tab`, 'listchars' => `lcs_tab`. - `nvim_set_option_value`: - Return the improved structures. Also from `vim.opt.x:get()`. - Eliminate api <=> lua roundtrip, centralize option structure handling. - Improve/unify errors. - Bump ERR_BUFLEN 80 → 256 so the "one of" list isn't truncated. - Eliminate old 'diffopt' order-dependence (`iwhiteall` before `iwhite`) Error samples: Typed-key path (opt_strings_check → diffopt/mousescroll/breakindentopt): E474: Unknown item 'foo' E474: 'context' requires a number E474: 'ver' number is out of range E474: 'algorithm' must be one of: myers, minimal, patience, histogram E474: 'filler' does not take a value Related: - #31084 - #34661 - #31820 - #14739 - #20107 - fix #18875 - :get() returns `{ sbr = true, shift = '3' }` (reified-keyset) instead of `{'sbr', 'shift:3'}` - Setting via table now works too. `object_as_optval_for` `is_map` now recognizes struct options. - fix #30296 - instead of `E474: Invalid argument`, errors now look like: ``` E474: Invalid value 'x', expected one of: single, double: ambiwidth=x E474: Unknown item 'foo': diffopt=foo E474: 'context' requires a number: diffopt=context:x ``` simplify `win_float_parse_option` from #26799.
* refactor(core): group insert-mode globals in `InsState` #40712Justin M. Keyes2026-07-13
| | | | | | | | | Problem: Insert-mode globals are scattered. Solution: Group them into one struct. Besides improving readability and discoverability, this greatly helps with save/restore of an insert-mode session.
* refactor(insert): rename edit.c => insert.c #40705Justin M. Keyes2026-07-12
| | | | | | | | | | Problem: - `edit.c` is an unnecessarily misleading and less-discoverable name than `insert.c`. - Numerous insert-mode related things are named with a `ins_` prefix. - There is already a `insexpand.c` module... Solution: Rename `edit.c` => `insert.c`.
* build: lint "strtol" #40442Justin M. Keyes2026-06-28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: No lint for strtol(). Solution: Add lint, and update existing usages. Callers that previously got a (garbage) large positive value: - `indent.c`: use getdigits() (intmax, no int truncation) with def=1 so overflow/too-large values stay positive and fall through to the existing "too big" check (E475). - `file_search.c`: use getdigits() with def=255 so overflow/too-large values keep the "max expand" (else) branch. The other conversions (api/command.c, eval/window.c, highlight_group.c, tui/tui.c) only diverge on pathological overflow inputs where strtol's result was already garbage and the observable outcome is unchanged.
* fix(messages): disallow source="nvim" progress msg #39315luukvbaal2026-05-06
| | | | | | | | | Problem: Internal progress messages use the "nvim" source (since ff68fd6b), plugins shouldn't be allowed to set the progress message source to "nvim". The message ID used for internal progress messages is not identifiable as such. Solution: Disallow setting opts->source to "nvim" with nvim_echo(). Refactor msg_progress() and callees to bypass nvim_echo(). Prepend message id for internal progress messages with "nvim.".
* fix(messages): "progress" kind for busy messages #39280luukvbaal2026-04-21
| | | | | | | | | | Problem: The "Scanning:" completion, bufwrite, and indent (there may be more) messages which indicate progress can use the "progress" kind for their msg_show event. Indent message does not have a kind. Solution: Emit these messages with the "progress" kind. Set the message id to the replaced kind so that a UI knows to replace it (and to provide a migration path in case a UI was distinguishing these messages for whatever reason).

* fix(api): don't override Vimscript SID (#32610)zeertzjq2025-02-25
| | | | | | | | | | Problem: When calling an API from Vimscript to set an option, mapping, etc., :verbose shows that it's set from an API client. Solution: Don't override current_sctx.sc_sid when calling an API from Vimscript. Also fix the inverse case where API channel id is not set when calling an API from RPC. * refactor(options): autogenerate valid values and flag enums for options (#31089)Famiu Haque2024-11-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Option metadata like list of valid values for an option and option flags are not listed in the `options.lua` file and are instead manually defined in C, which means option metadata is split between several places. Solution: Put metadata such as list of valid values for an option and option flags in `options.lua`, and autogenerate the corresponding C variables and enums. Supersedes #28659 Co-authored-by: glepnir <glephunter@gmail.com>
* refactor(options): remove `.indir`, redesign option scopes #31066Famiu Haque2024-11-16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: The way option scopes currently work is inflexible and does not allow for nested option scopes or easily finding the value of an option at any arbitrary scope without having to do long handwritten switch-case statements like in `get_varp()`. `.indir` is also confusing and redundant since option indices for each scope can be autogenerated. Solution: Expand option scopes in such a way that an option can support any amount of scopes using a set of scope flags, similarly to how it's already done for option types. Also make options contain information about its index at each scope it supports. This allows for massively simplifying `get_varp()` and `get_varp_scope()` in the future by just using a struct for options at each scope. This would be done by creating a table that stores the offset of an option's variable at a scope by using the option's index at that scope as a key. This PR also autogenerates enums for option indices at each scope to remove the need for `.indir` entirely, and also to allow easily iterating over options all options that support any scope. * vim-patch:9.1.0456: Left shift is incorrect with vartabstop and shiftwidth=0zeertzjq2024-06-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Left shift is incorrect with vartabstop and shiftwidth=0 Solution: make tabstop_at() function aware of shift direction (Gary Johnson) The problem was that with 'vartabstop' set and 'shiftwidth' equal 0, left shifts using << were shifting the line to the wrong column. The tabstop to the right of the first character in the line was being used as the shift amount instead of the tabstop to the left of that first character. The reason was that the tabstop_at() function always returned the value of the tabstop to the right of the given column and was not accounting for the direction of the shift. The solution was to make tabstop_at() aware of the direction of the shift and to choose the tabtop accordingly. A test was added to check this behavior and make sure it doesn't regress. While at it, also fix a few indentation/alignment issues. fixes: vim/vim#14864 closes: vim/vim#14887 https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/88d4f255b7b7a19bb4f6489e0ad0956e47d51fed Co-authored-by: Gary Johnson <garyjohn@spocom.com>

* refactor(options): remove `set_string_option_direct()`Famiu Haque2024-03-21
| | | | | | Problem: `set_string_option_direct()` contains a separate codepath specifically for setting string options. * refactor(indent): refactor computing of a string's indent size (#27252)VanaIgr2024-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The `get_indent_str_vtab()` function currently calls `tabstop_padding()` every time a tab is encountered (unless tabstops aren't used). `tabstop_padding()` either does a division by 'tabstop' If 'vartabstop' is not set, or iterates through the 'vartabstop' list to find current tab width. Since the virtual column only increases, we can keep track of where the next tabstop would be, and update this information once it was reached. `get_indent_str_vtab()` also depends on 'listchars' "tab" value from the current window, even though it may be called for a line from the same buffer in a different window. In most cases, it is called with tabstops enabled (last argument was `false`), so I split the function into one that uses tabstops and the other that doesn't. I removed `get_indent_str()` since I couldn't find any calls to it.
