* refactor(charset)!: delete 'isprint' and cleanup 'iskeyword' and friendsbfredl2026-09-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | In the `enc=utf-8` only world, the 'isprint' option is quite obsolete. The function is only consulted for decoded U+0080 to U+00FF chars whose printability is defined by the unicode charset, just like higher codepoints. Meanwhile, invalid `\x80` to `\xFF` bytes are always unprintable. Disentangle 'iskeyword', 'isfname' and 'isident' from each other by giving them all separate bitsets. Now these can be updated individually. These updaters can back out of errors gracefully, no need for extra panic logic in option[str].c to restore partially updated chartabs.
* test(harness): migrate away from magic globalsJustin M. Keyes2026-07-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: The magic globals `it`, `describe`, etc., are more trouble than they are worth. - Hooking into `after_each` requires `getfenv()` hacks. - They confuse luals/emmylua, because the top-level `.luarc.json` isn't merged with `test/.luarc.json` (apparently a luals limitation?) - They totally defeat discoverability because the user just has to "know" about the various magic symbols. So they harm DX, which means they serve no purpose at all. Solution: - Expose the test API from `testutil`, so tests can call `t.it()`, `t.describe()`, etc., in the conventional way. - Drop `getfenv()` hacks. - Drop the `setfenv()` injection in `load_chunk`. - Drop `test/_meta.lua`.

* test: reduce some clear() callszeertzjq2025-09-22
| | | | | | | | | Use only a single clear() call in some test/functional/vimscript/ test files whose test cases have very little side effect. A downside of using a single clear() is that if a crash happens in one test case, all following test cases in the same file will also fail, but these functionalities and tests don't change very often.
* refactor(api)!: rename Dictionary => DictJustin M. Keyes2024-09-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the api_info() output: :new|put =map(filter(api_info().functions, '!has_key(v:val,''deprecated_since'')'), 'v:val') ... {'return_type': 'ArrayOf(Integer, 2)', 'name': 'nvim_win_get_position', 'method': v:true, 'parameters': [['Window', 'window']], 'since': 1} The `ArrayOf(Integer, 2)` return type didn't break clients when we added it, which is evidence that clients don't use the `return_type` field, thus renaming Dictionary => Dict in api_info() is not (in practice) a breaking change.
* refactor(typval)!: remove distinction of binary and nonbinary stringsbfredl2024-06-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a breaking change which will make refactor of typval and shada code a lot easier. In particular, code that would use or check for v:msgpack_types.binary in the wild would be broken. This appears to be rarely used in existing plugins. Also some cases where v:msgpack_type.string would be used to represent a binary string of "string" type, we use a BLOB instead, which is vimscripts native type for binary blobs, and already was used for BIN formats when necessary. msgpackdump(msgpackparse(data)) no longer preserves the distinction of BIN and STR strings. This is very common behavior for language-specific msgpack bindings. Nvim uses msgpack as a tool to serialize its data. Nvim is not a tool to bit-perfectly manipulate arbitrary msgpack data out in the wild. The changed tests should indicate how behavior changes in various edge cases.
* test: improve test conventionsdundargoc2024-04-23
| | | | | | | | | Specifically, functions that are run in the context of the test runner are put in module `test/testutil.lua` while the functions that are run in the context of the test session are put in `test/functional/testnvim.lua`. Closes https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/27004.

* feat(rpc): allow empty string key in msgpack => Vim conversionJustin M. Keyes2023-12-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Since e057b38e7037 #20757 we support empty key in JSON encode/decode, but we don't allow it in RPC object => Vim dict conversion. But empty string is a valid key in Vim dicts and the msgpack spec. Empty string key was disallowed in 7c01d5ff9286 (2014) but that commit/PR doesn't explicitly discuss it, so presumably it was a "seems reasonable" decision (or Vimscript didn't allow empty keys until later). Solution: Remove the check in `object_to_vim()`. Note that `tv_dict_item_alloc_len` will invoke `memcpy(…, 0)` but that's allowed by the C spec: https://stackoverflow.com/a/3751937/152142
* fix(json): allow objects with empty keys #25564Emanuel2023-12-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Empty string is a valid JSON key, but json_decode() treats an object with empty key as ":help msgpack-special-dict". #20757 :echo json_decode('{"": "1"}') {'_TYPE': [], '_VAL': [['', '1']]} Note: vim returns `{'': '1'}`. Solution: Allow empty string as an object key. Note that we still (currently) disallow empty keys in object_to_vim() (since 7c01d5ff9286d262097484c680e3a4eab49e2911): https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/f64e4b43e1191ff30d902730f752875aa55682ce/src/nvim/api/private/converter.c#L333-L334 Fix #20757 Co-authored-by: Justin M. * feat(eval/method): partially port v8.1.1954Sean Dewar2021-10-03
| | | | | | | | | | | Does not include listener_*() functions. js_*() functions are N/A. json_encode() and json_decode() didn't include tests; add some anyway (to json_functions_spec.lua). test_lua.vim isn't included yet, so add tests to luaeval_spec.lua.
* refactor(tests): remove redir_exec #15718Justin M. Keyes2021-09-19
| | | | | | | | | | | Problem - `redir_exec` is obsolete, but it keeps getting used in new tests because people copy existing tests. - Disadvantages of `redir_exec`: - Captures extra junk before the actual error/message that we _want_ to test. - Does not fail on error, unlike e.g. `command()`. Solution - Use new functions like `nvim_exec` and `pcall_err`.
* test: reorg #15698Justin M. Keyes2021-09-17
Problem: Subdirectories like "visual", "insert", "normal" encourage people to separate *related* tests for no good reason. Typically the _mode_ is not the relevant topic of a test (and when it is, _then_ create an appropriate describe() or it()). Solution: - Delete the various `test/functional/<mode>/` subdirectories, move their tests to more meaningful topics. - Rename `…/normal/` to `…/editor/`. - Move or merge `…/visual/*` and `…/insert/*` tests into here where appropriate. - Rename `…/eval/` to `…/vimscript/`. - Move `…/viml/*` into here also. * test(reorg): insert/* => editor/mode_insert_spec.lua * test(reorg): cmdline/* => editor/mode_cmdline_spec.lua * test(reorg): eval core tests => eval_spec.lua
