* feat(ui)!: emit prompt "messages" as cmdline events #31525luukvbaal2025-01-02
| | | | | | | Problem: Prompts are emitted as messages events, where cmdline events are more appropriate. The user input is also emitted as message events in fast context, so cannot be displayed with vim.ui_attach(). Solution: Prompt for user input through cmdline prompts.
* refactor(options): autogenerate valid values and flag enums for options (#31089)Famiu Haque2024-11-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Option metadata like list of valid values for an option and option flags are not listed in the `options.lua` file and are instead manually defined in C, which means option metadata is split between several places. Solution: Put metadata such as list of valid values for an option and option flags in `options.lua`, and autogenerate the corresponding C variables and enums. Supersedes #28659 Co-authored-by: glepnir <glephunter@gmail.com>
* fix(messages): more ext_messages kinds #31279luukvbaal2024-11-20
| | | | Add kinds for various commands that output a list, the 'wildmode' list, and for number prompts.
* feat(mbyte): support extended grapheme clusters including more emojibfredl2024-08-30
| | | | | | | | | Use the grapheme break algorithm from utf8proc to support grapheme clusters from recent unicode versions. Handle variant selector VS16 turning some codepoints into double-width emoji. This means we need to use ptr2cells rather than char2cells when possible.
* refactor: collapse statements in single assignmentsLewis Russell2024-07-30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: Variables are often assigned multiple places in common patterns. Solution: Replace these common patterns with different patterns that reduce the number of assignments. Use `MAX` and `MIN`: ```c if (x < y) { x = y; } // --> x = MAX(x, y); ``` ```c if (x > y) { x = y; } // --> x = MIN(x, y); ``` Use ternary: ```c int a; if (cond) { a = b; } els { a = c; } // --> int a = cond ? b : c; ```

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The latter was mostly relevant with the past char_u madness. NOTE: STRCAT also functioned as a counterfeit "NOLINT" for clint apparently. But NOLINT-ing every usecase is just the same as disabling the check entirely.

* refactor: add xmemcpyz() and use it in place of some xstrlcpy() (#28422)zeertzjq2024-04-20
| | | | | | Problem: Using xstrlcpy() when the exact length of the string to be copied is known is not ideal because it requires adding 1 to the length and an unnecessary strlen(). Solution: Add xmemcpyz() and use it in place of such xstrlcpy() calls.
* vim-patch:9.1.0172: More code can use ml_get_buf_len() instead of STRLEN()zeertzjq2024-03-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: More code can use ml_get_buf_len() instead of STRLEN(). Solution: Change more STRLEN() calls to ml_get_buf_len(). Also do not set ml_line_textlen in ml_replace_len() if "has_props" is set, because "len_arg" also includes the size of text properties in that case. * vim-patch:9.1.0089: qsort() comparison functions should be transitivezeertzjq2024-02-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: qsort() comparison functions should be transitive Solution: Do not subtract values, but rather use explicit comparisons Improve qsort() comparison functions There has been a recent report on qsort() causing out-of-bounds read & write in glibc for non transitive comparison functions https://www.qualys.com/2024/01/30/qsort.txt Even so the bug is in glibc's implementation of the qsort() algorithm, it's bad style to just use substraction for the comparison functions, which may cause overflow issues and as hinted at in OpenBSD's manual page for qsort(): "It is almost always an error to use subtraction to compute the return value of the comparison function." So check the qsort() comparison functions and change them to be safe. closes: vim/vim#13980 https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/e06e43766500ecb4cd1031fa16cf9cbebdb222c1 Co-authored-by: Christian Brabandt <cb@256bit.org>

* vim-patch:9.0.2141: [security]: buffer-overflow in suggest_trie_walkzeertzjq2023-12-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: [security]: buffer-overflow in suggest_trie_walk Solution: Check n before using it as index into byts array Basically, n as an index into the byts array, can point to beyond the byts array. So let's double check, that n is within the expected range after incrementing it from sp->ts_curi and bail out if it would be invalid. Reported by @henices, thanks! https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/0fb375aae608d7306b4baf9c1f906961f32e2abf Co-authored-by: Christian Brabandt <cb@256bit.org>
* build: don't define FUNC_ATTR_* as empty in headers (#26317)zeertzjq2023-11-30
| | | | | | FUNC_ATTR_* should only be used in .c files with generated headers. Defining FUNC_ATTR_* as empty in headers causes misuses of them to be silently ignored. Instead don't define them by default, and only define them as empty after a .c file has included its generated header.

* refactor(grid): make screen rendering more multibyte than ever beforebfredl2023-11-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: buffer text with composing chars are converted from UTF-8 to an array of up to seven UTF-32 values and then converted back to UTF-8 strings. Solution: Convert buffer text directly to UTF-8 based schar_T values. The limit of the text size is now in schar_T bytes, which is currently 31+1 but easily could be raised as it no longer multiplies the size of the entire screen grid when not used, the full size is only required for temporary scratch buffers. Also does some general cleanup to win_line text handling, which was unnecessarily complicated due to multibyte rendering being an "opt-in" feature long ago. Nowadays, a char is just a char, regardless if it consists of one ASCII byte or multiple bytes.
* build: remove PVSdundargoc2023-11-12
| | | | | | | We already have an extensive suite of static analysis tools we use, which causes a fair bit of redundancy as we get duplicate warnings. PVS is also prone to give false warnings which creates a lot of work to identify and disable.
* refactor: change some xstrndup() and xstrnsave() to xmemdupz() (#25959)zeertzjq2023-11-10
| | | | When the given length is exactly the number of bytes to copy, xmemdupz() makes the intention clearer.
* refactor(grid): reimplement 'rightleft' as a post-processing stepbfredl2023-11-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | problem: checks for wp->w_p_rl are all over the place, making simple things like "advance column one cell" incredibly complicated. solution: always fill linebuf_char[] using an incrementing counter, and then mirror the buffer as a post-processing step This was "easier" that I first feared, because the stupid but simple workaround for things like keeping linenumbers still left-right, e.g. "mirror them and them mirror them once more" is more or less what vim did already. So let's just keep doing that.
* refactor: the long goodbyedundargoc2023-11-05
| | | | | | long is 32 bits on windows, while it is 64 bits on other architectures. This makes the type suboptimal for a codebase meant to be cross-platform. Replace it with more appropriate integer types.
* refactor(grid): implement rightleftcmd as a post-processing stepbfredl2023-11-03
| | | | | | | Previously, 'rightleftcmd' was implemented by having all code which would affect msg_col or output screen cells be conditional on `cmdmsg_rl`. This change removes all that and instead implements rightleft as a mirroring post-processing step.
* build(lint): remove unnecessary clint.py rulesdundargoc2023-10-23
| | | | | Uncrustify is the source of truth where possible. Remove any redundant checks from clint.py.
* vim-patch:9.0.1958: cannot complete option valueszeertzjq2023-10-01
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem: cannot complete option values Solution: Add completion functions for several options Add cmdline tab-completion for setting string options Add tab-completion for setting string options on the cmdline using `:set=` (along with `:set+=` and `:set-=`). The existing tab completion for setting options currently only works when nothing is typed yet, and it only fills in with the existing value, e.g. when the user does `:set diffopt=<Tab>` it will be completed to `set diffopt=internal,filler,closeoff` and nothing else. This isn't too useful as a user usually wants auto-complete to suggest all the possible values, such as 'iblank', or 'algorithm:patience'. For set= and set+=, this adds a new optional callback function for each option that can be invoked when doing completion. This allows for each option to have control over how completion works. For example, in 'diffopt', it will suggest the default enumeration, but if `algorithm:` is selected, it will further suggest different algorithm types like 'meyers' and 'patience'. When using set=, the existing option value will be filled in as the first choice to preserve the existing behavior. When using set+= this won't happen as it doesn't make sense. For flag list options (e.g. 'mouse' and 'guioptions'), completion will take into account existing typed values (and in the case of set+=, the existing option value) to make sure it doesn't suggest duplicates. For set-=, there is a new `ExpandSettingSubtract` function which will handle flag list and comma-separated options smartly, by only suggesting values that currently exist in the option. Note that Vim has some existing code that adds special handling for 'filetype', 'syntax', and misc dir options like 'backupdir'. This change preserves them as they already work, instead of converting to the new callback API for each option. closes: vim/vim#13182 https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/900894b09a95398dfc75599e9f0aa2ea25723384 Co-authored-by: Yee Cheng Chin <ychin.git@gmail.com>
* refactor: reorganize option header files (#25437)zeertzjq2023-09-30

* refactor(messages): fold msg_attr into msgbfredl2023-09-27
| | | | | problem: there are too many different functions in message.c solution: fold some of the functions into themselves
* refactor(memline): distinguish mutating uses of ml_get_buf()bfredl2023-08-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | ml_get_buf() takes a third parameters to indicate whether the caller wants to mutate the memline data in place. However the vast majority of the call sites is using this function just to specify a buffer but without any mutation. This makes it harder to grep for the places which actually perform mutation. Solution: Remove the bool param from ml_get_buf(). it now works like ml_get() except for a non-current buffer. Add a new ml_get_buf_mut() function for the mutating use-case, which can be grepped along with the other ml_replace() etc functions which can modify the memline.

* refactor(screen): screen.c delenda estbfredl2023-03-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | drawscreen.c vs screen.c makes absolutely no sense. The screen exists only to draw upon it, therefore helper functions are distributed randomly between screen.c and the file that does the redrawing. In addition screen.c does a lot of drawing on the screen. It made more sense for vim/vim as our grid.c is their screen.c Not sure if we want to dump all the code for option chars into optionstr.c, so keep these in a optionchar.c for now.
